How can we be sure God hears our prayers?

"Ask, and you shall recieve."  Says so in the Bible.

"All things are possible with God."  Says so in the Bible.

"I have plans for you....plans for a hope and a future."  Says so in the Bible.

I asked.  I prayed.  I believed.

Brian still suffered.  Brian still died.  Brian did not have a hope, or a future.

How can I trust that what I ask for, what I pray for, what I need, will be given to me?  How can I believe that

God hears my cries?   How can I know that God feels my hurts?

If I'm to learn and grow from this, why did God make an innocent bystander suffer for my education?
